The First USCT Regiment of Washington, D.C. distinguished itself in combat in Virginia and North Carolina, participating in some of the Civil War’s most famous battles, including: Chaffin’s Farm, Fair Oaks, and Fort Fisher.
About The Program The program begins in September and ends in June with a Promotional Program and Reception for the cadets. The Academy welcomes males and females as cadets who have demonstrated interest and desire to learn more about American history, the U.S. Civil War and the United States Colored Troops of Washington, D.C. Our meetings are held from 4 pm-5:30 pm four times a month during Marie Reed's After School for All. The cadets learn basic drilling and marching techniques and the Manual of Arms just as USCT soldiers did in 1863. The cadets will also participate in camp experiences that will allow them to experience living in canvas tents and eating hard tack for breakfast.
Fundraisers and donations comprise a major part of our operating budget The funds are used to provide the cadets with uniforms, transportation, and other equipment and materials they need to complete the total Civil War experience. A major element contribution to the success of the cadet program is the parent involvement component. Initially, our Parent and Student Orientation Night is held to introduce the Academy goals and objectives to our new cadets and parents. Parents of the cadets also participate in activities of the Academy by assisting with fundraising and volunteer activities. To become a donor. please click here.
